Background

English Language at Glasgow is unusual in that it offers research expertise across historical and contemporary areas of English, including the Scots Language. The programme taps into this breadth of knowledge by offering students the opportunity to pursue a high-level, yet taught, course on aspects of English Language and English Linguistics from medieval times to the present day. The course investigates these areas through key background texts in conjunction with hands-on written and spoken data from a range of our research projects including The Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary and Accent Change in Glaswegian.
