Programme Structure

The programme combines the development of an academic and theoretical awareness with a responsiveness to the interests and professional needs of each student.

The programme introduces students to the main theories of crime, justice and social control, explores the construction of criminological knowledge in the media, politics and our everyday lives, investigates criminal justice processes and systems, and critically evaluates local, national and global crime control policies and practices. It comprises core courses in: 

  • Understanding and Explaining Crime
  • Research and Enquiry in Crime

The programme also offers students the opportunity to take optional courses in a range of subject areas, including: 

  • Punishment and Penology;
  • Crime, Media and Popular Culture;
  • Criminal Justice/Global Challenges
  • Rehabilitation and Desistance from Crime
  • The Global Criminal Economy
  • Managing and Controlling Crime
  • Women, Girls in Crime and Criminal Justice
  • Trafficking in Cultural Objects

Students also research and write a 12,500 word dissertation on a subject of their own choosing under the guidance of an experienced supervisor.
