Creative Writing (MLitt)

PhDs in Creative Writing

The PhDs in Creative Writing, which incorporate taught elements including seminars, workshops and tutorials, are genre specific.  At present, we offer the following routes:

  • PhD in Writing Fiction
  • PhD in Writing Poetry

The programme is demanding in terms of specific intellectual application, while at the same time giving support on a workshop, seminar and tutorial basis to all candidates. The seminars explore the development of the chosen genre in time and space, and entail substantial reading of primary texts and relevant critical and theoretical work.

The programme is led by practising writers and academic staff with a strong interest in the arts of writing.  Assessment is based on an ongoing project which relates to the seminar elements of the programme, and particularly, on the final creative project.

Creative Writing PhDs by research are also offered where appropriate supervision is available.
