Corporate & Financial Law (LLM)
What one of our graduates has to say - Qi Qiu, China (2009/2010)
Why did you decide to study at the University of Glasgow?
I decided to study at the University of Glasgow for the following reasons:
1. The School of Law is quite famous in the UK especially the courses regarding corporate law;
2. Unlike other LLM programmes, the School of Law at the University of Glasgow provides classes with small student numbers. This allows each student the chance to participate in discussing issues with Professors and other classmates;
3. Upon consultation with other legal professionals, I found the courses offered on this LLM Programme were quite practical and useful from the employment perspective.
Why did you choose your Programme of Study?
I chose this Programme because I was determined to be specialised as a corporate lawyer after graduation.
What can you tell us about your experience studying at the School of Law?
The experience of studying at the School of Law was challenging and competitive. Every class I had offered me different perspectives of law and finance, which kept me studying and questioning more as a graduate student and has brought me the habit of staying demanding in my career.
What did you like the most?
What I like the most about the School of Law is that the faculties and Professors are always helpful both to your professional study and to your English skills.
How was your academic experience?
Studying at the School of Law was always challenging. For each class, you would be provided with a substantial amount of reading material and a list of questions that would be proposed in the classes. Therefore, with limited time to prepare for each class, I was trained to be intuitive and quite focused on targeting potential legal issues and the solution or answers to such issues. In addition, Professor Iain MacNeil always encouraged us to read the Financial Times and provided us with corporate cases, so that we were taught to analyse issues from a commercial point of view. These skills that I learnt and was trained in at the School of Law play a profound role in my career.
What support/facilities did you find most useful?
The University of Glasgow possesses one of the finest libraries in the UK. You can find all kinds of information and sources.
What do you think of Glasgow, the city? How is it like to live here as a (international) student?
Glasgow is a friendly city and easy to get around. You can get all kinds of food and all the goods you need in the city centre which is within walking distance from the campus. People in Glasgow are quite laid-back and hard-working.
How do you feel your Programme helped you with your career plans?
The Programme I completed helped me to secure a position as a corporate lawyer in Shanghai. It assisted me getting a job quicker than my peers. According to some of my classmates who pursued a career as investment bankers, possessing LLM degrees in corporate and finance law really helped them to stand out from other applicants and the banks appreciate and prefer employees with legal and financial knowledge and skills.
What would you recommend to a potential student thinking of coming to the School of Law?
The School of Law possesses top facilities including library, database, world famous Professors and high quality teaching. Therefore, it enjoys a great reputation and obtaining a degree from the School of Law would be of great help to your future career. All you should do before choosing an LLM Programme is to find out which profession or specific area of law you would like to focus in the future.What our current students have to say

"For me studying at Glasgow University is a big step towards advanced Law degree. Over the year-long course I have come across and have been learning through a variety of teaching styles in classrooms as well as independent study at the library. Being in GU supportive learning environment I feel that I have made the right decision to continue my education here." Altynay Darbayeva, Kazakhstan (2012/2013)
"In the program I really liked the possibility to combine the courses in my own way without restrictions. But what I loved the most about my LLM is that it covers a wide variety of topics that allows every student to find something interesting, but at the same time the structure of each seminar was very detailed and thoroughly balanced that students with previous working experience could benefit from it. Glasgow as a city is vibrant, cultural and so authentic! If you want to have a feel for Scotland Glasgow is the right place to be. It is fantastic to meet wonderful Highland cows during a Sunday walk in the country park, or to step every day on the land of Adam Smith and James Watt, or to dance a ceilidh dance in one of the numerous students’ events." Alexandra Kobzeva, Russia (2012/2013)
"I chose the University of Glasgow – School of Law due to its historical heritage and academic reputation within the area of corporate and financial law. All the lecturers have an extremely high academic level, who during the rewarding and well-organised courses manages to combine the theoretical aspect to each specific area of law with a practical approach that makes you learn how to use the law on ‘real’ problems. Furthermore, the University has excellent student-facilities - a ‘well-equipped’ library with convenient opening hours – and a friendly and service-minded administrative-staff that provide you with a superb service during both the application-procedure and the studies. Glasgow is also a great student city with its wide range of possibilities within culture, shopping, architecture and pubs. The citizens are helpful, open-minded and obliging which makes you feel welcome when you move around in the city. Finally, it is fairly cheap to live in Glasgow, and the city has a broad and efficient transport-system. I can strongly recommend the University of Glasgow – School of Law to prospective students as a place of academic excellence and skills development." Rasmus Taarnhoj, Denmark (2012/2013)
