Contemporary Law & Practice (LLM)

The Masters in Contemporary Law & Practice develops a deep and critical understanding of a range of contemporary issues related to the practice of Scots law.

  • If you have studied law or work in the legal professional (or related disciplines) this programme will enable you to continue your development. It combines academic research and professional expertise across a range of legal areas; focusing on the practical application of legal rules.
  • The programme is flexible so you can balance study with your professional commitments. You have a maximum of five years to accumulate credit for any of the listed qualifications. Individual modules may also be attended as stand-alone CPD courses.
  • Your accumulated credits can qualify as CPD with a range of professional bodies.

Programme overview

  • LLM: 120 credits + dissertation
  • PgDip: 120 credits
  • PgCert: 60 credits
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) credit: (15 hours per 10 credit module)

You will study via a range of teaching and learning methods including taught courses, case study problem solving, law reform projects, mooting and supervised research. There is an emphasis on intensive full-day teaching sessions combined with your own flexible learning.

  • Scots law in European context.

Optional courses

You can choose from a range of optional courses including aspects of criminal law, human rights, employment law, family law, public law, mental health law, property law and European law.

Entry requirements for postgraduate taught programmes are a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification (for example, GPA 3.0 or above) in a relevant subject.
