This is a joint programme of the School of Engineering and the School of Computing Science. It is highly flexible and allows you to tailor your studies to your own needs and interests.

As computer systems have reduced in size, and are increasingly mobile with more complex functionalities, they are now a fundamental component of smart device technology. This postgraduate programme is particularly suited to acquiring the complementary hardware and software knowledge and skills required for understanding and designing such systems. You should consider this degree if you

  • are a Computer Engineering graduate wanting to enhance your skills and knowledge, particularly in the area of smart device technologies
  • are an Electronic Engineering graduate wanting to develop software skills & learning
  • are a Computer Science graduate wanting to develop hardware skills & learning
  • are a graduate of another engineering discipline or physical science, wanting to change field.

The Computer Systems Engineering MSc programme also provides excellent preparation for those wanting to pursue a PhD in a similar research field. In the most recent independent survey of research quality, the Research Assessment Exercise for 2008, the School of Engineering had 88% of its research activities classified as being of international standard, including 55% classified as world-leading or internationally excellent.
