MSc advisory board
The remit of the board is to provide the course with practitioner insight into the field of Computer Forensics and E-Discovery, to critique course activities and structure in order to ensure that the course is providing industry viable content. The board meets once a year. The board members are listed below.
Mike Dickson – Forensic Analyst National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (Scotland)
Mike Dickson joined Lothian and Borders Police 22 years ago and has held a number of roles within that Force. During this time, he was also working as a freelance computer programmer on numerous projects worldwide, notably for the financial sector and IBM. On the basis of this, in 1998, he was invited to help set up the Forensic Computer Unit within Lothian's headquarters as a forensic analyst.
In 2003, this Unit was expanded greatly to become the Scottish National Hi-Tech Crime Unit at which time it migrated to the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency. During this time, he obtained a Masters Degree in Computer Forensics at the Royal Military College of Science and has worked on high profile cases covering such diverse areas as child abuse, fraud, counterfeit currency, software piracy, drugs, terrorism, missing persons, murder and money laundering. Mike lectures at the Scottish Policing College, Strathclyde University and the National Police Improvement Agency and assists with technical courses in his field. He has also been published in various journals in the field of computer and mobile telephone forensics.
Andrew McDonald – Capita IT Services
Andrew works for Capita IT Services, which provides IT to over 100 different business units in Capita Group. Andrew sits in the Technical Directorate and provides guidance to the IT board on all deals above £2.5m, and strategic directions for various IT offerings. Previous roles included Chief Architect in BT for Financial Service Sector, and Senior Architect in National Australia Banking Group. Sector experience includes, Defence, Financial Services, Telecommunications, Central & Local Government, Media and Education. Andrew holds a PhD in Computing Science from Glasgow University, is a Chartered Engineer with the British Engineering Council and is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow. His research interests include: Security, Agile Processes and Software Engineering for Web-based applications.
Andrew is very experienced in large outsource and transformation initiatives. In addition, other areas of his profile include:
- Sector experience in financial services, telecommunications, government and education,
- Strong experience in Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), payments, Internet banking, security and identity management initiatives,
- Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) with British Engineering Council,
- Ph.D. in Computing Science, 'The Agile Web Engineering (AWE) Process' from the University of Glasgow,
- Published author and international conference presenter in Software Engineering, Agile Processes and Security,
- Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow in the Department of Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute,
- Winner of British Telecom (BT) CEO Annual Awards For Excellence 2008/09.
John B Wilson - (Dip. INF.Sec.) National Australia Group – Security Consultant
A Security Consultant with 25 years of Information Security experience working for a Financial Services, Fortune 500 Company. He graduated from Royal Holloway University, London with a Post Graduate Diploma in Information Security in 2002. Currently his primary responsibilities lie with Information Security Policy and Security Awareness, he has a broad range of knowledge across all of the domains of Information Security Management. Having produced an 'Information Security Incident & Investigation Standard' for his current employer, he has a strong interest in this field and conducts incident investigations when required. He represents his employer as a member of an Industry Security Committee within the Association for Payments Clearing Services (APACS). Since 2005, he has been acknowledged in two PhD Theses from the University of Glasgow, Computing Science Department.
