Community Learning & Development
Programme structure
For the Postgraduate Diploma in Community Learning & Development students will complete four core-courses and a practice placement, which will total 120 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF). For the Master of Education in Community Learning & Development, students will also undertake a research project, which will total 180 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF).
Core courses
Models of Community & Development
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course introduces students to the values and principles of community learning & development. It also explores a range of approaches, models and policies of the community learning & development field. Students will critique these models and approaches against the values and principles of Community Learning and Development.
Social Theories for Community Learning & Development
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course explores a range of social theories relevant to Community Learning & Development. These include critical theory, post-structuralism, theories of everyday life and the hegemonic nature of society and the socially constructed nature of identity.
Empowerment Strategies for Community Learning & Development Practice
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course enables the students to reflect on their practice and link the theories studied to practice. The course challenges the students to look for ways in which they can support the empowerment of the people they work with towards contributing to social change.
Educational Approaches to Community Learning & Development
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course explores the educational approaches which underpin Community Learning & Development practice. In particular it examines radical educational models, especially that of Freire.
Practice Placement
40 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course provides an opportunity for students to apply the theories and values learned to practice contexts. Students undertake two blocks of practice. The first is formative and non-assessed and takes place in semester 1. The second is summatively assessed and takes place in semester 2. In total 480 hours of practice are undertaken by the students.
Research Project (MEd only)
60 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
For the dissertation/research project you will complete a guided enquiry project focusing on a specific aspect of Community Learning & Development. The project is approached on a group basis, but leads to an individual dissertation. You are encouraged to follow your own interests in the design of the project and will be fully supported by your allocated supervisor throughout your research.
