Topics:

Clinical Practice Team
Dr Gavin Richardson Clinical Practice Director
Dr Dave Martinage  Locum Senior Clinical Tutor
Dr Suzy O’Connor  Clinical Tutor

The Clinical Practice Team work to maintain excellent standards in clinical practice education.  They liaise closely with Clinical Supervisors, Local Tutors and NHS Line Managers, in arranging, coordinating and assessing clinical placements, conducting placement visits, assessing clinical assignments, carrying out Annual Review of Learning Plans and participating in clinical teaching on the Programme.

Local Tutors

NES and local West of Scotland NHS Trusts have agreed the establishment of LocalityTutor posts in each of the Health Board areas associated with Psychology training courses across Scotland. The Locality Tutor is responsible for coordinating local clinical placements for locally employed trainees, according to the Learning Plans set by the Programme.

  • Dr Matt Wild, Greater Glasgow Local Tutor, Glasgow & Clyde NHS
  • Dr Karen Porter, Ayrshire & Arran Local Tutor, Ayrshire & Arran NHS
  • Dr Sally Dewis, Lanarkshire NHS

Clinical Supervision on Placement

A main Clinical Supervisor oversees and is clinically accountable for all of the Trainee’s work.  The BPS Guidelines on Clinical Supervision guide the responsibilities of Clinical Supervisors.

The BPS guidelines recommend that a clinical supervisor is a Clinical Psychologist, eligible for registration for chartered status, with over two years qualified experience. However, those between one and two years post-qualification may apply for provisional accreditation to supervise under provisional accreditation criteria at the discretion of the Clinical Practice Director.   Clinical supervisors are accredited to supervise on the West of Scotland DClinPsy Programme, through a formal nomination from their head of service or line manager. Accreditation is ratified by the Programme Organisers Group and the Supervisors Sub-Group.

Clinical Placements

All trainees are employed by a West of Scotland NHS Psychology Service or Department, and complete clinical attachments within the catchment area of their NHS employer.  Clinical placements are planned and coordinated within the modular courses and integrated with the academic curriculum.  Six modules or “Courses” involve clinical practice education through a placement within NHS services.  Placements are designed to meet learning needs and to develop appropriate clinical competence, as well as to enable trainees to work in those services and settings which are seen as having high priority within NHS Scotland.

  • Course 2: Foundation Clinical Practice I
  • Course 3: Foundation Clinical Practice II

Year II

Assessment of Clinical Competence

A range of documentation, both formative and summative, is central to the procedures of monitoring evaluation of competence development. These documents are essential tools both for Clinical Supervisor and Trainee to review progress.  They are submitted to the program at the end of each Course.  The evaluation of the Trainee’s clinical competence is carried out by the Clinical Supervisor at each placement, monitored and reviewed by the Clinical Practice Team.  Evaluation and reviews will contribute to the Examination Board Meetings.  Each Trainee is expected to take an active and reflective approach to the development of clinical competence and to maintain documentation which provides a record of learning experiences, their reflections on these experiences, and awareness of the process of developing competences in line with the Intended Learning Outcomes.

Reflective Practice

In the context of the modernisation agenda within the NHS, and recent developments in Higher Education, the significance of reflective practice in clinical practice education has become evident. Clinical Psychology training increasingly adopts a reflective-practitioner as well as a scientist-practitioner model.  The West of Scotland DClinPsy Programme has paperwork and procedures in place, in line with CTCP guidelines, and relevant guiding documents, to embrace an agenda of reflective practice in the context of professional development.

Supervisor Training & Workshops

A regular series of Supervisor Training events are held throughout the year.  The Clinical Practice Team organises training days for new and experienced supervisors, taking place in March and September each year.  Some further training days are organised by the Local Tutors and the Supervisors Sub-Group, on relevant topics.  NHS Education for Scotland runs training workshops for new supervisors in Applied Psychology in the NHS, and is planning to provide a systematised training programme for experienced supervisors in the future.

Supervisors Sub-Group

The Supervisors Sub-Group is a Sub-Group of the Programme Strategy Group and is convened by a Chair nominated and agreed by the Programme Strategy Group.  The Sub-Group is comprised of supervisor representatives from employing Health Boards and members of the Programme Organisers’ Group. The Constitution Terms of Reference are:

  • To represent supervisor issues
  • To advise on approval and accreditation issues for supervisors and maintain the list of    accredited supervisors
  • To develop the competence agenda
  • To plan supervisor training
  • To enhance and support placement capacity
  • To receive feedback from trainees regarding clinical placements
  • To advise on professional practice issues

MOODLE(Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment)

Following accreditation, clinical supervisors are able to access a Supervisors Section on the MOODLE, our centrally supported VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).  This webpage provides a range of documents and resources and log-in details are provided upon accreditation.
