Clinical Nutrition

Programme Background

This Masters programme is designed for doctors, nurses and pharmacists to give an excellent grounding in general nutrition and issues associated with treating patients. It is not available for dieticians. Students are provided with the knowledge and experience necessary for engaging in, and contributing to current debates about major issues in nutrition with particular focus on Clinical Nutrition.

The core aims of the MSc (Med. Sci.) programme are:

• To provide a thorough grounding in the principles of human and clinical nutrition

• To equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in nutrition, both in the UK or overseas

• To enable graduates to engage in, and contribute to, current debates about major issues in nutrition

• To provide students with experience in evaluating the role of nutrition in the causation, progress and treatment of disease

Nutritional science is a subject of growing importance in many aspects of healthcare, lifestyle and industry. There is a growing need for suitable qualified clinical nutritionists who are already qualified health professionals. The programme is designed to include induction sessions and transferable skills which will enhance the learning experience particularly for overseas students.

Graduates of this programme generally return to their own countries and continue with their clinical careers. Some graduates go on to complete PhDs in Glasgow or other high quality institutions across the world.
