Core courses

The core courses for students on the MSc in City Planning & Real Estate Development are as follows:

  • Development Economics introduces students to development appraisal principles and techniques, and the factors that impact on property values. Students will apply these principles in a development appraisal project
  • Development Process is designed to enable students to understand the process of real estate development and its relationship to broader social, economic and political forces. This optional course is worth 10 credits.
  • Global Cities provides students with a broad knowledge of the concepts and theories relevant to understanding cities in the global context and the patterns of urban development and transition in countries different regions in the world.
  • Governance and Markets examines concepts, debates and issues in contemporary government and governance including the theories of governance, democracy and accountability. It critically assesses the relationship between government agencies and the market, the institutional frameworks of urban development and the decision making process.
  • Professional Practice, Ethics & Management (10 credits) seeks to cultivate a reflective and legally aware approach to questions of ethics and values in real estate and planning professional practice.

This degree shares a common structure in semester 1 within the other REPR MSc Programmes, as a result of which, students can switch from one degree to another at any time prior to commencing the second part of the programme.
