Childhood Practice
Programme structure
The Postgraduate Diploma in Childhood Practice comprises of four core-courses and two placement courses, which will total 120 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF).
Core courses
Building a Professional Learning Community
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
The course aims to: engage in critical analysis of the relationship between theory, policy and practice in childhood practice; explore what it means to be a childhood practice professional; extend students' concepts of professionalism in childhood practice, thus boosting their personal and professional confidence; examine strategies to build a participative approach to change management in childhood practice settings; examine critical issues in the leading of staff within a childhood practice context; and appreciate the role of values in childhood practice leadership.
Leading improvements in Childhood Practice
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course aims to: explore the role of managers/lead practitioners in leading change and improvements; appreciate the processes underpinning a change-orientated approach to leadership; develop and critically appraise leadership skills; and appreciate the emotional and personal aspects of leadership in reflecting and developing as a leader.
Contemporary Perspectives on Children & Childhoods
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course aims to: explore children's rights on an international level and in local contexts; raise the general level of knowledge and understanding of the rights of the child and especially the complex relationship between protection, provision and participation rights defined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child; and encourage professionals of various profiles to engage in awareness raising and information dissemination on children's rights, so as to contribute to improving the fulfilment of the rights of children in all areas of their professional lives.
Practitioner Enquiry and Decision-Making
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
The course aims to: help develop the ability to access and critically review relevant literature (information literacy); help develop the use of research evidence in making educational decisions; introduce some basic research skills – qualitative and quantitative methods of enquiry, including an introduction to data analysis; and increase awareness of ethical issues in conducting practitioner research

Practice Placement A
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course aims to: provide opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, skills and values of the overall programme in a practical setting; and encourage critical reflection on practice, leading to improved practice.
Practice Placement B
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)
This course aims to: provide opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, skills and values of the overall programme in a practical setting; and encourage critical reflection on practice, leading to improved practice.
