Celtic Studies

Programme Structure

There are four key components to the programme. A Core Courses is taken each semester.  In Semester 1 students will be exposed to a variety of approaches to researching Scottish culture, while in Semester 2 the major themes and debates in (primarily medieval) Celtic Studies will be considered. The Languages component allows students to study one of the medieval Celtic languages, usually Early Gaelic (Old and Middle Irish) or Middle Welsh, at an appropriate level.  Scottish Gaelic may also be studied. The Specialist Options allow students to explore and deepen their knowledge of the particular area they would like to research further, and can take the form of a lecture course, further language study or a course of guided reading. The Specialist Options usually form a preparation for the Dissertation, a single piece of original written research.
