Applied Population & Statistical Mapping
Background
This programme combines a substantial part of the existing MSc in Geoinformation Technology & Cartography, part of the Social Science research programme and Departmental and University experience in census and population mapping using spatial database, GIS and graphics software. Target Audience:
- Geography and Social Science graduates;
- National statistical and census agencies;
- Local and regional government organisations (planning, economic development);
- Humanitarian Aid agencies.
Many organisations use census and statistical data, but often staff lack specialist training in mapping aspects of the Census and in statistical mapping. The mapping component covers pre- and post- census mapping operations as used in preparing for a census or other surveys (boundary and enumeration area mapping), mapping for use during the census operations (for enumerators) and cartographic design and production of maps and atlases resulting from statistical analysis of the results. The programme also covers aspects of census and statistical data collection, storage, retrieval and dissemination using spatial databases and web or geo-portals.
While forming part of the Geomatics postgraduate suite of programmes, this programme includes contributions from staff within the University (e.g. Statistics, Urban Studies, Public Health) and external contributions, including the Registers of Scotland, UKBorders (Edina) and the Scottish Boundary Commission.
The Postgraduate Diploma is composed of 2 semesters (8 months) of taught courses. The MSc requires a further 4 months on an applied project. It is also possible to study part-time over 2 or 3 years, or for those with appropriate qualifications to attend individual courses.
