Applied Medical Science
Background
This programme is aimed at preparing students to undertake a PhD study programme. The mix of formal taught material and student-led discussion about topical issues provides an engaging and vibrant arena to develop skills in evaluating evidence and formulating research plans. Developing practical skills in research is critical to its success and this programme will provide tailor-made training in the cutting-edge techniques that are applied in modern medical research. The skills to conduct research, evaluate findings and present them to experts and non-experts alike are sharpened by completing an independent research project. Successful completion of the programme will provide an invaluable stepping stone to a PhD or cement skills necessary for career progression.
This programme is designed to attract students, principally from overseas, from subjects allied to medicine to develop their skills and training in the principles of evidence based medicine and the research methodologies that underpin modern clinical research. The course shares a core module with a range of other related clinical and non-clinical disciplines exposing students to discussions of scientific issues as they relate to clinical evidence and practice. Such cross-fertilisation of expertise will enhance the student learning experience and promote engagement between clinical and scientific orientated students to debate and discuss current issues in Medical Science.
Each of the courses that constitute the programme is aimed at building competency in
- gathering and evaluating evidence from the published literature
- undertaking research addressing an evidence-based hypothesis
- evaluating and reporting the evidence from a research project
Students successfully completing this programme should expect to be competent to undertake a PhD level programme of study exerting a high degree of independence in their research planning and implementation.
