Applied Linguistics and English Language

Background

This programme is unusual in that it offers research expertise in contemporary areas of English Language and English Linguistics together with investigation of the central concerns of TESOL.  The programme taps into this breadth of knowledge by offering students the opportunity to pursue a high-level, yet taught, course which provides a theoretical basis for the more practical aspects of teaching English. The course investigates these areas through key background texts in conjunction with research on written and spoken data from a range of our projects including Accent Change in Glaswegian,  The Acquisition of Socio-Linguistic Norms and The STACS Project. The opportunity to take a course in the University of Glasgow’s Language Centre will allow you to explore classroom practices and methodology.
