Professor Ruth Jarrett

Department: Veterinary Medicine, Division of Pathological Sciences

Specialist subjects:
Viruses and lymphoma; pathogenesis of Hodgkin lymphoma; virus discovery. My main interest is the role of viruses in the pathogenesis of Hodgkin lymphoma and childhhod leukaemia. Around one third of cases of Hodgkin lymphoma are causatively associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a virus that infects 95% of the adult population. Our group is interested in defining the genetic and environmental factors associated with development of EBV-associated Hodgkin lymphoma. Epidemiological data also suggest that an infectious agent may be involved in EBV-negative Hodgkin lymphoma cases and we are searching for a virus in these cases as well as invesitgating non-viral aspects of disease pathogenesis. Childhood leukaemia shares many similarities with young adult Hodgkin lymphoma and we are also searching for a virus in this disease.
