The ScottishPower Foundation has announced 17 new post-graduate scholarship grants for the 2014/15 academic year.

The ScottishPower Foundation, in partnership with its Spanish equivalent Fundacion IBERDROLA, has today announced 17 new post-graduate scholarship grants for the 2014/15 academic year.

The scholarships aim to contribute to the education of young professionals with the capabilities required to lead the energy industry into the future. Applications for the forthcoming academic year opened on Monday 3 February and close on Thursday 3 April.

The partnership between the two organisations will invest over 1.65m in research and education programmes between the UK and Spain with scholarships seeking to promote excellence in education in the area of energy. Special emphasis is given to the development of renewable energy sources, the enhancement of biodiversity and improving the efficiency of the energy system.

Professor John Chapman, Head of the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Glasgow, said: “We’ve very pleased to be partnering with the ScottishPower Foundation and Fundacion IBERDROLA for a second year.

“The University is involved in a wide range of renewable energy research and development projects, and our graduates are well-equipped to make real contributions to changing how energy is generated, stored and distributed.”

Ann Loughrey, Trustee and Executive Officer at the ScottishPower Foundation, said: “The partnership between the ScottishPower Foundation and Fundacion IBERDROLA helps continue the development of the UK’s future industry leaders at five leading Universities.

“Today’s announcement further demonstrates our long term investment in skills and education and encourages emerging talent at the highest level.”

Grants are available to those who wish to study towards qualifications in energy and environment related studies such as renewable energies, sustainable energy systems, environment and biodiversity, clean coal technologies, emissions management, energy efficiency, energy storage, electric vehicles and smart grids. The grants cover full enrolment costs and provide an additional living allowance of £1,200 per month.

Scholarship places are available at five of the UK’s most respected Universities: the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, University of Liverpool, University of Strathclyde, and Imperial College London.
