The University will confer honorary degrees on 10 distinguished men and women at the annual Commemoration Day ceremony at 11.15 a.m. TODAY Wednesday 19 June
For the Degree of Doctor of Divinity (DD)
EMERITUS PROFESSOR JOHN HICK
Scholar of Theology and the Philosophy of Religion, and Editor of Macmillan's Library of the Philosophy of Religion
For the Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD)
The first woman to be appointed a Senator of the College of Justice in Scotland
For the Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc)
Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain
PROFESSOR PETER HIGGS,
Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at Edinburgh University. Professor Higgs gave his name to the 'Higgs Boson' the sub-atomic particle being sought by thousands of researchers.
For the Degree of Doctor of Engineering (DEng)
DR BONNIE J DUNBAR,
Astronaut - Dr Dunbar has flown on five space missions including a mission to the Russian MIR space station when she was the payload commander, responsible for the operation of 23 science and technology experiments. Her academic interests are in the effect of spaceflight on human physiology.
