We left Glasgow at 7:50am on Saturday 11/12/04 and finally launched at
11:00am at Pease Bay after setting up a shuttle and leaving a car at Coldingham
Bay. There is a public car park NT794706 just outside the caravan site barrier,
250m from the beach. In the summer you would need to carry the boats through the
caravan site but the manager let us in because the site was closed. At
Coldingham Bay the car park is 250m from the beach and 30m up! we used a trolley
to bring the boats from the beach up a private road with a gate/sign post that
says "No unauthorised vehicles. No launching of boats". The St. Vedas
hotel/bar is right next to the car park. The hotel has a webcam.
You could also park/launch in St Abbs harbour for a small fee.
GPS track of
route. total 17.7km, paddling time 3hrs 41minutes, average speed
4.8km/hr, max speed 9.0km/hr.

Fast Castle Head from Siccar Point.

Bay to the east of Black Bull in possession Grey seals and pups The males
were "rutting" and bellowing. The bay was full of eider ducks and
cormorants.

Approaching Fast Castle Head, walkers on the cliffs give scale.

Below Fast Castle. The ruins of Fast Castle stand on the edge of a sheer cliff
into the sea. It was excavated between 1971 and 1986. It dates from the Iron Age
but the current walls were probably constructed in the 14th century and
inhabited until the 17th century. As the border drifted back and forwards, it
was used by both Scottish and English forces. In 1567 Sir Nicolas Throgmorton described
it as "fitter to lodge prisoners than folks at liberty."

Convoluted 450 million year old Silurian strata at Brander Point. The strata
were originally formed horizontally as mud deposited at the bottom of the sea.

Picnic spot opposite Hurker rock, the beach was quite steep here.

Looking west to Brander Point from Hurker. The swell could make landing here
tricky.
13:32
Beach at Hurker under Oatlee Hill. There is a pair of markers for a measured
nautical mile on top of the cliffs, we did not attempt to see how fast we could
paddle it!

Skelly Hole. The narrow surge channel to the right of the giant old red
sandstone stack, Floatcarr Rock, is only just wide enough to take a kayak
through, yet underwater it bells out as the stacks are severely undercut. A
diver friend tells me that a couple of double decker busses could pass side by
side on the bed of the channel!
