Australia

Australia FlagThe history of Australia and Scotland are closely interlinked.  Indeed it was a Scotsman, Governor Lachlan Macquarie who was instrumental in giving Australia its name, as he used it frequently in dispatches to the UK, until the name was officially adopted.  Due to a massive emigration of Scottish people to Australia in the first half of the 19th century, many modern day Australians hail from Scottish background or ancestry.  There are even some famous Scots-Australians featured on the ten, twenty and one hundred dollar bills, Dame Mary Gilmore, Andrew Barton Paterson, Reverend John Flynn and Dame Nellie Melba.

Culturally Australia and Scotland are very much alike far beyond a shared love for rugby, Kylie Minogue, and Home and Away!  In Glasgow, you will find the headquarters of the National Australia Group which owns one of Scotland’s main bank chains, Clydesdale Bank.

Around 50 Australians are currently here at the University of Glasgow, and we would be delighted to open our doors to more.

Partnerships with Australian Institutions

The University of Glasgow currently has exchange agreements with five major Australian institutions.  The University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales, the University of Queensland, the University of Sydney, and the University of Adelaide have all proven very popular destinations for students wishing to participate in our Exchange Programme.
