Japan

The first Japanese students matriculated at the University in the 1870s and since then strong links have been forged between Glasgow and Japan. In 1901, Professors Joji Sakurai and Isao Iijima of the University of Tokyo were awarded honorary degrees from the University of Glasgow. Other famous alumni include Aikitu Tanakadate (1856-1952) who later founded the Institute of Seismology at Tokyo University. Today we have a growing number of students from top Japanese Universities and schools.

Japanese students come to Glasgow for Study Abroad, Summer School, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Study.

Our Japanese Society was set up in 1997 and runs regular events ranging from the bi-annual sushi party and the Japanese film show to impromptu gatherings and pub meets.

Entry requirements

Undergraduate

The University will consider students who have taken GCE A Levels, International Baccalaureate, a recognised foundation or access programme or equivalent.

Students with a Japanese Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate (Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho) will normally require a foundation course before entering a degree programme. We offer a number of pre-entry programmes at Glasgow International College. In some cases, students with excellent grades in the Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho and very good English language skills may be admitted directly to 1st year of a degree programme.

International A-Levels, IB, SAT and AP are also accepted.

Postgraduate Taught

We will consider applications to Masters degrees from graduates of recognised Japanese universities, normally with 80% (GPA 3.0 on a 4-scale) or better.

Partnerships with Japanese Institutions

The University works closely with Tokyo University, Waseda University and Hitotsubashi University.
