Outgoing European exchanges (Erasmus)
with the support of the Commission of the European Communities within the framework of the LLP Erasmus Programme
The Erasmus programme is available to students currently studying at the University of Glasgow who would like to study at one of our exchange-partner universities in Europe or participate in a work placement as an approved and recognised part of their University of Glasgow studies. Erasmus is a European Commission exchange programme that enables students in 31 European countries to study for part of their degree in another country. We have subject-specific exchange agreements with around 250 universities throughout Europe.
Erasmus Outgoing Internal Grant Application Form 2013-14 is now available.
The Erasmus programme offers
- a challenging new experience
- the opportunity to live in another country and develop or improve language skills
- a new perspective on an academic subject, transferable employment skills and the opportunity to travel throughout Europe
- the chance to form an international network of friends.
Exchanges can last from a minimum of three to a maximum of twelve months. Credit is transferred to your University of Glasgow degree and participating students receive an Erasmus grant. The Eramus Programme is available for Study or Work Placements. British Council Teaching Language Assistantship students in Europe are eligible for the Erasmus Work Placement grant. If you are doing a Comenius Assistantship, you are not also eligible for an Erasmus grant in the same year. You cannot receive funding from another LLP funding source in the same year as your Erasmus mobility. This includes Erasmus Mundus and Comenius grants.
All students, regardless of their nationality, are eligible to participate in this programme. Students from outside the EEA/EU or Switzerland will need to research their own visa requirements.
During the course of your higher education, you are entitled to receive a maximum of two Erasmus grants. This can be one Erasmus grant for study and one for a work placement, two work placements, or two study placements. The total duration of all grants may not exceed 24 months.
Students on Erasmus Mundus (EM) Masters Courses may be able to apply for an Erasmus study grant provided you have not received an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.
You may also be able to take advantage of the Erasmus Intensive Language Courses (EILC). See the EILC section for more information.
To find information as you research where you might go, to look for information or assistance as you prepare for your Erasmus exchange or placement, or to network with other students abroad (before, during or after your experience), take a look at the links under 'Erasmus country & network links'. You'll find a wide array of information available through these different sites. Many universities will also have Facebook or Twitter sites, including separate accounts for their International Office. These could also be useful to find out more about where you plan to go or will be going. (Note: we do not endorse any particular site, nor can we guarantee the information contained in them.)
Erasmus Outgoing Internal Grant Application Form 2013-14 is now available.
Your subject area may have earlier deadlines, so talk to the Academic Co-ordinator about their selection process. The host may also have earlier nomination and/or application deadlines; research this carefully.
Study Placements
Study - Identifying a suitable placement
- Study placements involve study at a partner university. The agreements are made at the subject level.
- Browse our exchange partner listings to get an idea of where you could go. Please note the list may not be up to date, so please check with the Erasmus office or your Subject Coordinator, too. Research the institution you would like to attend.
- Check courses they offer to Erasmus students. Ensure your proposed curriculum fulfills any University of Glasgow requirements and is approved by your Erasmus Subject Coordinator(s).
- Also check the language(s) in which the courses will be taught and be sure this is suitable for you. Some universities may require proof of language, for example via an approved test or through a test they administer. It is your responsibility to know in what language courses are taught and what the host's language requirements are, and decide whether you have sufficient skills to participate fully in that language.
Study - Selection & Application
- Selection and approval is done at the subject level. Contact your subject coordinator(s) to find out their selection and approval process and deadlines.
- Once approved by the subject, you will likely need to be officially nominated by the Erasmus Office to the host university. Once your subject(s) confirm your selection, the Erasmus Office can work on your nomination to the host.
- Contact the university abroad to ensure you will complete and submit their local application and accommodation forms properly and on time. Note: the deadlines for submitting applications at the university abroad could be earlier or later than those at the University of Glasgow; research this carefully, know what is expected and when.
- Complete the Internal Grant Application form, including the section 'Details about your host university'. You can download, fill out (preferably typed) and save the document. Please drop completed applications in the black Erasmus box at the visitor desk at the level 2 entrance of the Fraser Building, or post to Sally Baxter at the 71 Southpark Avenue address below. The Erasmus Subject Coordinator(s) in your discipline(s) must complete and sign this form where required. Incomplete applications will be returned.
- It is the host university that accept you to their university.
Study - Other
- You must also complete and submit the ECTS Learning Agreement. This can be turned in after the application but before you start. It is required (and to your benefit) to fill in this form and get it signed by your Subject Coordinator and the Erasmus Office (Lisa Broadwell) at University of Glasgow, as well as by the Departmental and Institutional Contacts at your host university before you start your exchange. This also gives you a good idea of what you will be taking while abroad, and that your course selection has been at least provisionally approved.
- All students participating in one semester or full year exchanges are expected to take 30 ECTS per semester, or 60 ECTS for the full year and to sit exams. Joint Honours Modern Languages students (e.g., Joint Honours French & Spanish) must enrol in 20 ECTS and sit exams for their 4th year 2nd language abroad period.
- You cannot receive funding from another LLP funding source in the same year as your Erasmus mobility. This includes Erasmus Mundus and Comenius grants.
Work Placements, including British Council Teaching Language Assistantships - How to apply
These apply to students doing a work placement. This could be in a lab at one of our partner universities, or in a company or business or other institution in an Erasmus participating country. They also apply to language students doing an assistantship at a school in through the British Council. Comenius grant recipients cannot also receive an Erasmus grant in the same year. Please note that students with work placements in Switzerland are also eligible for Erasmus grant funding.
- Complete the Internal Grant Application Form, including the section 'Details about your Language Assistantship and other Work Placement'. You can download, fill out and save the document. Please drop completed applications in the black Erasmus box at the visitor desk at the level 2 entrance of the Fraser Building, or post to Sally Baxter at 71 Southpark Avenue address below. The Erasmus Subject Coordinator(s) in your discipline(s) must complete and sign this form where required. Incomplete applications will be returned.
- You will also need to complete and turn in the Training Agreement. This gets signed by you, your Subject Coordinator, and the host university, school or company abroad. This document establishes and details what you will be doing and how it will be monitored and evaluated. The Training Agreement can be turned in after the application deadline but before you start your Placement abroad.
- If you are going to a university, you may still likely need to complete and submit their local application and accommodation forms; it is your responsibility to check this with them. This will not apply to British School Assistantships.
A special note to Language Assistants: British Council Language Assistants and Comenius Assistants are not the same and their funding comes from different sources. Comenius Assistants are not eligible for the Erasmus grant.
EILC and Other Language Information
If your Erasmus placement is in a country with a less widely used language, you may be interested in the Erasmus Intensive Language Courses (EILC) offered by universities across Europe. It is an opportunity to improve your host language skills and get to know the culture before you start your Erasmus period. Even if your courses or work environment will be in English, it is a great opportunity to learn the basics of the language used where you will be living. EILC are not offered for French, German, or Spanish (Castilian). For more details, please check the EILC information page and see the FAQ.
You may be eligible for up to one additional month of the Erasmus grant if you participate in a pre-sessional, in-country EILC and the language is not a part of your degree course.
EILC applications are usually available from 15 April. Deadline for semester 1/full year is 1 June; the deadline for semester 2 is 31 October. You must inform and apply for an EILC through the University of Glasgow Erasmus Office. If you do not apply through this office, you may not receive the additional grant amount.
NOTE: We highly encourage you to take up any opportunity for host language instruction. However, non-EILC pre-session language classes are not eligible for additional grant funding. Check with your subject co-ordinator to find out whether language classes (in- or pre-session) are eligible for credit transfer.
