University of Glasgow wave

ICC6

The ICC6 Congress took place at the University of Glasgow from 17th-22nd July 2005.

We were privileged to be asked by the International Crustacean Council to host this event, as announced at ICC5 in Melbourne, Australia in 2001. It was a further honour also to be designated the 5th European Crustacean Conference (ECC5), as was decided at ECC4 held in Lodz, Poland in 2002.

As previously, The Crustacean Society (TCS) Summer Meeting was incorporated into ICC6, but 2005 was a special occasion for TCS as they celebrated their 25th anniversary. To mark this they held a Jubilee Event, to which all ICC6 delegates were invited.

ICC6 had a scientific programme of five Plenary Lectures, eight Special Symposia and four additional Symposia. In total there were 231 Oral Presentations and   285 Posters.

The meeting was attended by around  450 delegates from 53 countries, and was hailed as a great success. The Congress venue at the University of Glasgow was an impressive forum for much scientific discussion and networking.

The programme had many highlights, but it was particularly interesting to see how the rapid developments in the fields of genomics and bioinformatics are changing our interpretation of the Phylogeny of Crustacea. Also, as concerns grow about climate change, it was timely that ICC6  provided an overview of the ecology and biogeography of crustaceans in a wide range of environments, and addressed the effects of human influences such as the introduction of exotic species, and the impact of fisheries and aquaculture.

The social programme at ICC6 included the Congress Banquet and Ceilidh, a Civic Reception hosted by the Lord Provost of Glasgow, and excursions to provide a mid-week break. Many delegates also found the time to enjoy the sights of the City of Glasgow and also the superb countryside of hills and lochs nearby.

As Chairman of the Organising Committee I thank all delegates for coming to Glasgow, and contributing to the success of ICC6.
