Sole of the foot 1: The skin

The skin of the sole of the foot (like that of the palm) is much thicker than elsewhere. It is like this at birth, but the difference accentuates with walking. The subcutaneous fat is contained in small compartments with fibrous divisions. This is the principle of "interior sprung" mattresses and serves to cushion the foot.
