This muscle is in the anterior compartment of the leg and arises from the upper part of the tibia and the interosseous membrane. Its tendon passes beneath the extensor retinacula at the ankle (just in front of the medial malleolus) to insert into the medial cuneiform and first metatarsal.
The muscle is a dorsiflexor (extensor) and invertor of the foot; when the foot is on the ground, tibialis anterior is probably more useful in helping to accommodate to uneven ground by adjusting the position of the leg.
It is interesting to note that its insertion in the foot is the same as peroneus longus, the major evertor of the foot. Thus, muscles having opposite actions are inserted into the same area of the foot and this may help in producing quick responses to sudden changes in balance.
It is supplied by the deep peroneal nerve.
