This is a general anatomical term of direction or position. It is the equivalent
of "backwards" or "at the back of" as in - the femoral vessels pass posteriorly
(i.e. backwards) to lie in the popliteal fossa behind the knee
- the adductor magnus muscle lies posterior to (i.e.behind) the
adductor brevis muscle
- popliteal lymph nodes drain lymph from the posterior (i.e.back)
surface of the leg.
