medial

This is a general anatomical term of direction or position. It is the equivalent of "inwards" or "nearer the midline than" as in: inversion of the foot causes its sole to face medially (i.e. towards the midline of the body, inwards) the femoral artery and vein lie medial to (i.e. nearer the midline than) the femoral nerve branches of the saphenous nerve supply skin over the medial (i.e. inside) surface of the leg.
