This is a general anatomical term of direction or position. It
is the equivalent of "inwards" or "nearer the midline than" as in:
- inversion of the foot causes its sole to face medially (i.e. towards
the midline of the body, inwards)
- the femoral artery and vein lie medial to (i.e. nearer the midline
than) the femoral nerve
- branches of the saphenous nerve supply skin over the medial
(i.e. inside) surface of the leg.
