lateral collateral ligament

The lateral (fibular) collateral ligament of the knee helps to stabilise this major joint.

It is a round, cord-like structure running from the lateral condyle of the femur to the head of the fibula. The ligament is surrounded by the tendon of biceps and the tendon of popliteus passes between it and the capsule of the knee joint.

Collateral ligaments are characteristic of hinge joints.
