lateral

This is a general anatomical term of direction or position. It is the equivalent of "outwards" or "to the side of" as in eversion of the foot causes its sole to face laterally (i.e. away from the midline of the body, outwards) the femoral nerve lies lateral to (i.e. to the side of, away from the midline in relation to) the femoral artery and vein branches of the sural nerve supply skin over the lateral (i.e. outside) surface of the foot.
