This is a general anatomical term of direction or position. It
is the equivalent of "outwards" or "to the side of" as in
- eversion of the foot causes its sole to face laterally (i.e.
away from the midline of the body, outwards)
- the femoral nerve lies lateral to (i.e. to the side of, away
from the midline in relation to) the femoral artery and vein
- branches of the sural nerve supply skin over the lateral (i.e.
outside) surface of the foot.
