gluteal line
The gluteal lines are bony ridges on the outer surface of the ilium.
There are usually three of these, the posterior, anterior and inferior
gluteal lines (the latter may be hard to see).
These ridges delineate the origins of the gluteal muscles. Thus:
- Gluteus maximus
is attached to the ilium posterior to the posterior gluteal line,
- gluteus medius
is attached between the posterior and anterior gluteal lines and
- gluteus minimus
is attached between the anterior and inferior gluteal lines.
