gemelli muscles

The gemelli muscles are a pair of small, deeply placed muscles of the buttock. They arise from the margins of the lesser sciatic notch of the hip bone and insert into the tendon of obturator internus. They can be thought of as displaced elements of that muscle and probably have little importance beyond being part of the muscle mass which helps to confer stability on the hip joint. They may laterally rotate the thigh.
