extensor digitorum longus

Extensor digitorum longus As its name suggests, this muscle extends (= raises) the toes, with the exception of the big toe or hallux. The muscle has an extensive origin from the proximal end of the tibia and fibula and the interosseous membrane between these two bones. The muscle passes beneath the extensor retinacula of the ankle region (which holds it down and so prevents it "bowstringing") and enters the dorsum of the foot as four tendons which insert into the middle and distal phalanges of toes II-V by means of a complex dorsal digital expansion. The muscle extends the outer toes and also extends (= dorsiflexes) the whole foot at the ankle joint. It is supplied by the deep peroneal nerve.
