As the eyeball is adducted (ie moves towards the midline) the superior rectus becomes an increasingly inefficient elevator of the eyeball. As the diagram shows, if the eyeball could be adducted 67 degrees, then the optical and orbital axes would be at 90 degress - and superior rectus a useless elevator.
