How to indicate your option choices for session 2006-2007
Please read the instructions below carefully and in full
before completing the webform.
1. Application webforms
Science undergraduate students
All Level-3, returning Work Placement and returning Study
Abroad students (as well as repeating Level-4 students) should complete and
submit a webform to indicate a first and second preference
for each of their four Level-4 options; the webform must be submitted by Friday 5st
May 2006. If you do not intend to progress to Level-4 next
session or if you intend to go on a work placement, you should also submit a webform
to indicate this.
Your submitted webform will be reviewed by the Level-4 Course Co-ordinator,
who will check that your choices comply with the course guidelines. If the
Level-4 Course Co-ordinator does not approve your choices, you will be
notified by email and asked to re-submit the webform. Therefore, please check your
"@student" email address regularly.
One-year intercalating BSc (MedSci), BSc
(DentSci) and BSc (VetSci) students
Students who are offered a place in a one-year intercalated
course should complete and submit a webform to indicate a first and second
preference for each of their Level-4 options; the webform must be submitted
by Friday
11th August 2006 (except Anatomical Sciences students -
see below).
Your submitted webform will be reviewed by the Level-4
Course Co-ordinator, who will check that your choices comply with the
course guidelines. If the Level-4 Course Co-ordinator does not approve
your choices, you will be notified by email and asked to re-submit the
webform. Therefore,
please check your "@student" email address regularly.
Students accepting a place in the Anatomical Sciences one-year
intercalated course should complete and submit the webform after discussing
their choices with the Course Co-ordinator, Professor Payne, at the
beginning of the session (i.e. submit the form by Friday 29th September 2006).
MRes students
During the summer before arriving at the University, prospective
MRes students should complete and submit a webform to indicate a first
and second preference for their option; the webform must be
submitted by Friday 25th August 2006. Your submitted
webform will be reviewed by the MRes Course Co-ordinator, who will check that
your choices comply with the course guidelines and contact you if you need
to reconsider any of your preferences.
2. Available choices
There are some limitations to which options you may choose:
1.
Each Level-4, intercalating and MRes course sets its own
'rules' about options, or combinations of options, that are required,
encouraged, permitted or not allowed; you must comply with these. The rules for each course are set out in the webform.
2.
Some options will only accept students with an appropriate
background. Science undergraduate students should check
the option outlines (see
Outlines) to ensure that they comply with the entry
requirements of the options they have chosen. Intercalating and
MRes students should discuss their suitability with the relevant
Option Organiser.
3.
MRes students may not choose the Marine Microbiology, Tropical Rainforest Ecology
or Tropical Marine Biology options as these take place before the
start of the academic session.
4.
The Marine Microbiology option, which runs in
September before Term 1, does not belong to a particular option block;
students taking Marine Microbiology should choose three other
options, one each from any three of the four blocks (A, B, C & D).
5.
The Marine Microbiology option may run at the same time as either the Tropical Rainforest Ecology or the Tropical
Marine Biology options. You
should check the dates don't clash before choosing these options.
6.
You should list the Tropical Marine Biology or Tropical Rainforest Ecology options as
a choice only if you have already been offered a place. There are a very
limited number of places on these field trip-based options.
7.
You should list the Investigating Biological Function In
Vivo option as a choice if you have already pre-registered your
interest. Students who have not pre-registered may not choose this option.
More information
about each option is available on the options webpage (http://www.gla.ac.uk/ibls/US/L4/options/).
Please check this information carefully to ensure that you understand
the nature of the options you are choosing.
3. Allocation to options
Unless otherwise stated (see
Outlines), there will be an upper limit of approximately
35 students per option. If an option is over-subscribed,
preference will be given to those students with the best academic
record at Level-3 and to those students in the Honours course
which offers the option. In addition, options may be cancelled if too few students
wish to do them.
Whenever possible, you will be allocated to your first choice of option
although this cannot be guaranteed. However, students are sometimes
allocated to their second choice so it is important that your second choice
is a valid selection for your Level-4, intercalating or MRes course, and a
genuine second choice.
4. Publication of allocations
You will be notified of your option allocations by email. Option
allocations are not made until after the Level-3 resits results are
published. Therefore,
you should check your "@student" email accounts regularly towards
the end of the summer vacation. You should not contact the
Undergraduate School Office to check your option allocations.
5. Changing option choices
If you wish to change an option choice after the allocations have been published, you must
first seek the permission of your Level-4, intercalating or MRes Course
Co-ordinator and the relevant Option Organiser before the start of
the option involved. When the change has been agreed, you must
inform Helen Reid in the Undergraduate School Office of the change. As a
matter of courtesy and to help planning, you should also inform the
Option Organiser of the option you are leaving that you will not be
attending.
