Challenges of Violence in the Lives of Girls and Young Women

Joint One-day Conference

9.30 am - 4 pm, Friday 29 September 2000 The Big Issue Conference Centre, College Street, Glasgow

A major one-day conference organised by the University of Glasgow and Children in Scotland that disseminated recent research findings on the role that violence plays in the everyday lives of girls and young women (aged 12-18 years) in the UK.

Despite increasing concern about the violent behaviour of girls and young women, little is actually known about their attitudes and experiences of violence. Drawing on recent ESRC funded research, key speakers discussed how violence features in the lives of girls and young women across the UK. In doing so, they provided information about young women’s pathways into violence; how they use violence; how they deal with potentially violent situations; and how they desist from using violence. The data presented challenged some of the traditional thinking about violence and provided a basis to explore the implications of the research for policy and practice.

This conference was attended by researchers, academics, local authority elected members, as well as senior policy makers, managers and practitioners working with children and young people in the following areas: social work, education, youth work, community education, child protection, youth justice, probation services and adolescent mental health.
