Clinical Academic Training and Advisory Committee (CATAC)
The Clinical Academic Training and Advisory Committee (CATAC) was established in Autumn 2003 under the guidance of the Graduate School to develop and facilitate a support structure for Clinical Lecturers.
A Clinical Lecturer is someone who:
- is usually in possession of a higher degree or expects to complete a higher degree during his or her clinical lectureship;
- is research active;
- holds the post of Specialist Registrar or equivalent;
- has a National Training Number or equivalent (hospital-based subjects only);
- is undertaking a period of training normally not more than six years duration with the expectation of advancing to a
Senior NHS post or University Senior Lectureship or equivalent.
The committee protects/mentors individuals, provides representation at RITA reviews, where appropriate, and ensures that individuals are able to complete academic training with research and clinical achievements in order to be in a position to successfully secure Clinical Senior Lecturer posts within the University (or other institutions).
CATAC has developed a formal system that streamlines the process of renewing existing Clinical Lecturer posts and developing new posts (either NES sponsored or supported from university funds). This process has helped accelerate post approval by the Faculty Executive.
CATAC provides the Faculty with a formal link to the Postgraduate Dean and NES for discussion of all matters in relation to Clinical Lecturer posts.
