Promoting a positive ethos for research, teaching and enterprise

Welcome to the Faculty of Information & Mathematical Sciences (FIMS)

The Faculty brings together staff and students from four departments each internationally renowned for excellence in teaching and research. We welcomed excellent results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise with the volume of our submission judged 4* (world-leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) placing us, on average, amongst the top 10 in the UK.  This performance builds on our 2001 results and benefits from our strategic investment in new infrastructure and internationally recognised researchers.  In the National Student Survey 2009, our final year undergraduate students expressed overall satisfaction ratings which were outstandingly high: Computing Science 92%, Mathematical Sciences 95% and Psychology 96%.

We offer exciting opportunities for undergraduate study in a research-led environment in all areas of the cognitive, mathematical and information sciences with exceptional prospects to work towards a higher degree at masters or doctoral level, on projects that explore the frontiers of current research.

Our research and teaching, whether single or multidisciplinary, continues to make a major contribution to the emergent technologies of the 21st Century, particularly in modern business, finance and the professions.
