18th Century minister’s theorem helps scientists map out cell signalling
Researchers at the University of Glasgow have successfully exploited statistical inference and mathematical modelling to discover how cells communicate. In a world-first, a multidisciplinary team of statisticians and computer scientists led by Prof Mark Girolami; molecular pharmacologists led by Prof Miles Houslay and Prof Graeme Milligan; together with cancer biologists led by Prof Walter Kolch, used Bayesian-inference-based modelling to establish which pathway was utilised in a particular cell signalling event. |

Computer scientists play key-role in UK’s first three-way kidney transplants
Computer scientists from the University of Glasgow are playing a key role in the NHS’s living donor kidney transplant programme which saw the first multiple kidney transplants involving three couples take place at the end of last year. They have devised a computer program which matches donors to patients whose original willing donor is clinically incompatible, enabling organs to be swapped anonymously between people on the same day in different parts of the UK.
