Hospital Infection Society UK have awarded £4,840 to Mr Richard Brady (Research Fellow, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh), Dr Graeme Eunson (Department of Paediatrics, Edinburgh Children's Hospital), Dr Paddy Gibb (Clinical Director, Medical Microbiology, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh) and Professor Malcolm Dunlop (Professor of Academic Coloproctology, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh) to evaluate Nasal MRSA carriage and MRSA contamination of pesonal devices amongst contemporary NHS doctors; Implications for staff screening and infection control policies.
£64,000 has been awarded by Gilead Sciences to
Dr C Williams (Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow),
Dr B Jones (Royal Infirmary, Glasgow) and
Dr G Ramage (Glasgow Dental School) to research 'Development of a sensitive and specific Real-Time PCR assay for invasive Aspergillus fumigatus' from August 2006.
Gilead Sciences have awarded £35,000 to Dr G Ramage (Glasgow Dental School), Dr C Williams (Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow) and Dr B Jones (Royal Infirmary, Glasgow) to study 'The potential role for AmBisome against Candida albicans biofilms in the ICU?' from April 2007.
Pfizer Pharmaceuticals have awarded £14,000 to Dr C Williams (Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow),
Dr G Ramage (Glasgow Dental School) and
Dr B Jones (Royal Infirmary, Glasgow) to research 'Interactions between Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aspergillus fumigatus in biofilms in the cystic fibrosis lung' from February 2007.
€262,870 has been awarded to the
University of Dundee for its part in a Burden of Resistance & Disease in European Nations project. Data will be collected from one general ward in each of 15 EU countries (Ninewells Hospital in Dundee will represent Scotland), and a network of 200 Intensive Care Units in Europe. [

£18,250 has been awarded by the Chief Scientist Office to
Professor Peter Davey, Professor Marion McMurdo, Dr Charis Marwick and Loma Scahill for a 12-month pilot study for a cluster randomised trial of a prescribing interentin to reduce risk of hospital acquired infection with Clostridium difficile in older inpatients. [

The NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme has awarded £1,394,074 to
Professor James N'Dow (University of Aberdeen) to investigate types of urethral catheter for reducing symptomatic urinary tract infections in hospitalised adults requiring short-term catheterisation.
