Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh Hot Topic Symposium - Healthcare Associated Infection
Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI), often due to MDR bacteria continues to increase, causing extensive mortality, morbidity, increased costs and length of stay and not insignificant public and political concern. Much of the problem is due to the Antibiotic Paradox. These wonder drugs have allowed huge strides to be made in invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, changing the face of modern medicine. Simultaneously however, antibiotic resistance (due to the use of these same antibiotics) threatens these very advances and may even have inappropriately reduced our adherence to conventional infection control measures, further aggravating the problem. MRSA and C difficile illustrate that antibiotic resistance is actually leading to an increase in numbers of HAIs. This world-wide Epidemic is everyone's concern. The International distinguished speakers assembled for this State of the Art Symposium will address the issues as they affect Medical and Para-medical practitioners, describing the current and likely future size of the problem, along with possible solutions.

Lessons learned from Swine Flu for Researchers: How should we study the next pandemic?
The unprecedented national emergency response to the Swine Flu (A/H1N1) pandemic during 2009 was accompanied by a substantial research effort to understand how the outbreak affected the British population and to test ways of reducing this impact. The challenges of conducting this research were considerable, but the results brought immediate public health benefits as well as advances in our understanding of human behaviour. Despite the successes, however, there are always lessons that could be learned. This workshop will bring together researchers from different disciplines within the social sciences in order to identify ways that we could do better in the next pandemic. What key issues should behavioural and social scientists explore the next time around? How could researchers from different disciplines work together more effectively? How should funding be made available? And how do you obtain ethics approval in a hurry? This one-day workshop will explore all of these topics and allow participants the chance to share their experiences and suggest ways for improvement. The workshop will be of particular relevance to researchers from any behavioural or social science discipline with an interest in this area, but will also be of interest to a wider audience who have an interest in influenza.

Raising the standards of publication and research in infection control studies and outbreak reports - a training event based on the ORION statement
This event considers How to use a CONSORT equivalent for your conference abstract, your paper, your grant or your general reading. It is acknowledged that the standard of much infection control research and publication needs to be raised in order to base policy and practice on a robust evidence base. This CONSORT equivalent statement for such studies seeks to raise the standard of research and publication in the field. It has been jointly published by Lancet ID and JAC, and shorter training workshops have been given at regional SpR level in London, and for the Federation of Infection Societies. Previous workshops have concentrated on infection control intervention and antibioitc management intervention studies. It is intended that this workshop will give participants two infection control/antibiotic stewardship papers (one ORION compliant and one not) to assess using the ORION checklist and working in small groups, then feeding back. They will also be given two outbreak reports to assess. Understanding behavioural responses to infectious disease outbreaks
The influenza pandemic of 2009 highlighted the need to better understand how individuals may modify or change their behaviour in response to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Many aspects of healthcare response and control policies to large-scale outbreaks are influenced by behaviours: vaccination strategies are dependent on uptake rates; changes in the likelihood of seeking health-care can affect surveillance methods; school or workplace closures to reduce transmission could have significant economic implications which may override the expected control benefits. Quantifying these types of behaviour and integrating them into predictive epidemiological and economic models are key challenges. This meeting will explore such issues from a number of different perspectives, with reference to important lessons learnt so far from the swine ‘flu pandemic. The workshop will also consider new technologies or methodologies that may help investigate behavioural responses, and the ethical challenges they present; we expect it to be of interest to those involved in health-care policy generation, epidemiological and economic modellers, and health psychology researchers.

Infectious Diseases: a Brave New World?
Infectious diseases continue to challenge on many different levels. The last year has seen the first European recognition of H1N1 influenza in Scotland, the emergence of anthrax in Scottish drug users and growing rates of tuberculosis, HIV and imported infection in the Scottish population. This symposium covers some of these important changes and builds on previous symposia in further defining the expanding role of infection specialists in the modern hospital. We are delighted also to focus on emerging neurological infections, perhaps the most challenging of all infections to manage. The meeting should be of particular interest to trainees and practising hospital clinicians, microbiologists and public health physicians but many topics will also be of relevance to GPs, nurses and pharmacists working in the field of infection.

European Antibiotic Awareness Day
The aim of the Day is to provide an annual opportunity for awareness raising about the threat to public health of antibiotic resistance and how to use antibiotics responsibly. The latest data confirms that across the European Union the number of patients infected by resistant bacteria is increasing and that antibiotic resistance is a major threat to public health. Responsible use of antibiotics can help stop resistant bacteria from developing and help keep antibiotics effective for the use of future generations. Successful national public awareness campaigns are already resulting in more rational use of antibiotics and a reduction in levels of antibiotic resistance.
The European Antibiotic Awareness Day is targeting the general public and primary care prescribers, e.g. doctors and prescribing nurses. If you support this initiative, here are several ideas on how to help:
Spread the word
- Talk about the European Antibiotic Awareness Day and its significance with your friends, family and colleagues.
- Help advertise the European Antibiotic Awareness Day in newsletters, on websites, in the media and on the Internet, by inserting a link on your website, in your e-mail signature or in your blog.
- Print and disseminate the information materials available on teh website.

Healthcare Associated Infections of the Future: Rising to the Challenge
The Infectious Disease Research Network is running this workshop alongside colleagues at the Health Protection Agency and University of Cambridge.
We are inviting a range of speakers from across infection control including clinicians, built environment scientists, architects, designers and representatives from industry to discuss a hypothetical situation of an emerging, highly resilient and antimicrobial resistant infectious microorganism that is rampaging through 21st century hospitals.
The workshop is intended to stimulate debate and ideas from delegates. We are encouraging all speakers to think of questions for the audience that can be considered during an afternoon discussion session. For example, what else would professionals like to see in the future that would enable the control of this type of situation? This could include improved hospital design, diagnostic technologies and medical equipment, or anything else you care to think of! This workshop is suitable for all those those with an interest in infection control, whatever your discipline or specialty. Ultimately we would like to encourage and facilitate cross disciplinary collaborative work in this area.
There is a call for abstracts for a poster display (deadline 4 May) and the opportunity to pitch your work to the audience and invite collaborations! We have a reduced delegate price for current students.
