The Division of Infection & Immunity is one of the leading centres in the UK for the study of pathogens of medical and veterinary importance. We are key contributors to the Wellcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology and the Scottish Infection Research Network.

Our two major Research Themes are:

We study a range of pathogens from bacteria and fungi through to protozoa and helminths. We are interested in how these pathogens interact with their hosts and cause disease, and in the rational development of novel chemotherapeutics and vaccines. The Division has direct access to state-of-the-art applied genomics, proteomics and imaging facilities.

The Division is well supported by the Wellcome Trust, the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the European Union, the World Health Organisation, the Royal Society and various pharmaceutical companies.

70% of research activity in Infection and Immunity was rated Internationally Excellent or World Class (3* or 4*) and a further 25% International in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE UoE 03, Infection and Immunology), which was 1st in Scotland and 7th in the UK.
