Required previous knowledge

It is assumed that participants will be familiar with most of the following:

• the basics of continuum mechanics (including small strain theory, concept of stress, simple constitutive relationships, equilibrium)
• vector calculus and
• elementary tensor analysis.

It is also expected that they will be familiar with the theory and practice of linear elastic finite element analysis.

These aspects will be reinforced by a set of introductory notes that will be sent out in advance of the school.

Familiarity with a programming language would be helpful but not necessary.
