Primary Education with Teaching Qualification (Dumfries Campus)

Degree: MA (Hons)

The MA Primary Education with Teaching Qualification was given unconditional approval by the General Teaching Council for Scotland on the 7th August 2008.

This new four-year degree programme offers prospective primary teachers the opportunity to learn with students on other degree programmes at the University of Glasgow, Dumfries Campus. You will gain a primary teaching qualification and develop transferable skills, including a professional approach and independence, which will prepare you for the role of the primary teacher.

What can I expect to study?

As well as studying a combination of the courses from the MA Liberal Arts Programme, you will also follow a programme involving:

Curriculum studies

These courses develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of the main areas of the primary school curriculum.

You will benefit from the research expertise and teaching strengths of resident Dumfries Campus staff in the areas of

  • Environmental sustainability
  • Health, well being and social studies
  • Humanities (history, literature, modern languages, philosophy and science and technology).

In addition the Liberal Arts ethos develops a rigorous, self-reliant and creative approach to learning while encouraging good academic practice and active citizenship: highly relevant to the new Curriculum for Excellence 3-18.

Educational studies

These courses develop the knowledge, skills and understanding for effective learning, teaching, assessment and reporting in the classroom, as well as encouraging the pastoral and support role a teacher in a primary school undertakes. You will also acquire up-to-date knowledge and understanding of national policy and curricular developments.

School experience

This element of the programme aims to develop your awareness of all aspects of the work and organisation of the primary school. At least 30 weeks of the four-year programme will be spent working in schools. This will take the form of single or serial days in the early stages of the programme, developing into block placements of several weeks.

Thereafter, continuing professional development is supported by employers and other course providers. There are opportunities for development in leadership and management, specialist subject study areas and for further postgraduate study and research.
