Scottish Survey of Adult Literacy and Numeracy

Duration: October 2008 - December 2009

Funder and Value: Scottish Government, £450,000

Abstract:  The Faculty of Education at the University of Glasgow is leading a consortium to conduct a large-scale survey of the Scottish population to determine the level and distribution of literacy and numeracy skills. Our partners are the University of Edinburgh, the National Foundation for Educational Research and Gallup Europe. The funder for the research is the Education Analytical Services Division of the Scottish Government.

This is the first time the Scottish population has been surveyed since 1996, and the results will be comparable with the results of that survey as well as internationally. It provides an important opportunity to create a snapshot of the skills in Scotland and understand how those skill levels fit with other OECD countries.

The survey, of 2500 individuals in all parts of Scotland, will be conducted in early 2009, with results expected in October 2009.
