Programmes and Courses
The Faculty of Education is an exciting and stimulating place to study at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It has a robust, active and expanding research portfolio with international expertise in the areas of adult & lifelong learning, science education, teacher education, religion & education, social justice and globalisation & education among others.
Through the Graduate School for Education we offer a range of taught postgraduate degrees, designed for a broad cross-section of interests. For those of you wishing to gain deeper insight and reflection on your own education practice we offer a suite of tailor made programmes, aimed at providing the necessary qualifications and skills for your professional life.
Our broad range of programmes include provision for those wishing to be teachers; those wishing to enhance and develop their professional skills through continuing professional development; those wishing to teach in community education and those wishing to undertake research. We offer creative and innovative online courses including a Doctorate in Education.
Faculty staff are actively involved in a wide variety of external networks. Consequently the faculty is well placed to promote a dynamic interaction with policy makers and practitioners in relation to the generation of research questions, the conduct of research and the dissemination of research findings. These activities feed directly into the wide range of taught postgraduate programmes offered in the faculty.
With the shift towards a global, knowledge-based economy, the promotion of education within a lifelong learning context forms a key feature of strategies aimed at the achievement of social and economic policies. The Faculty of Education is a future-oriented institution with a strong past. We have major research strengths in science education where the current director of the Centre for Science Education recently received the Royal Society of Chemistry's Nyholm Medal for an outstanding contribution to science education.
Our adult and lifelong learning work figures among the very best in the UK and beyond. Leadership and management, and support for learning are also important areas of excellence. Our work in faith-based schooling is among the most thoughtful and innovative in and beyond the UK. All of this work and much more besides is developed within the orbit of our over riding commitment to social justice. Currently we house a Department for International Development funded unit on global citizenship. Our Scottish Centre for Research in Education is the oldest such centre in the UK and conducts research for government, the EU and other agencies. We have recently appointed two new professors of international standing to strengthen our team.
