Summary:
This presentation provides a critical overview of the discourse concerning Higher Education as promoted by the EU with respect to the idea of rendering Europe the "most competitive knowledge economy". This has implications for a variety of fields notably university continuing education and lifelong learning in general. A critical analysis of this EU discourse in light of recent trends in HE in various places in Europe will be provided.
Profile:
Professor Mayo has been researching and working in the area of adult continuing education for the past twenty years. He teaches in both this area and sociology of education. His books include Gramsci, Freire and Adult Education (Zed Books, 1999), Liberating Praxis (Praeger, 2004; Sense 2008), Learning and Social Difference (co-authored with C. Borg, Paradigm, 2006) and Adult Education in Malta (DVV International, 2007).
