UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's message for International Literacy Day on 8 September quoted from Emeritus Professor Lalage Bown, Department of Adult and Continuing Education, who gave the UNESCO International Literacy Lecture in Paris, drawing on many years of her research on literacy, gender and development.
