About us

The Faculty of Education is the most recently formed in the University.  Its roots, however, go back to the 19th Century founded as it is on a teachers’ college, one of the oldest and most established departments of adult and lifelong learning in Britain and a number of research and teaching centres, most especially Europe’s long established Scottish Centre for Research in Education (SCRE).

In keeping with the identity and ambition of a major international, and research-led University the Faculty of Education offers opportunities for those wishing to study with scholars of outstanding international reputation.

Among the key areas of faculty strength are included:

  • Adult and Lifelong Learning, with a strong commitment to Community Education
  • Professional Knowledge in Teachers’ Education
  • Science, Technology and Informatics
  • Culture, Religion and Education
  • Assessment and Learning in Education including Support for Learning, and Able Pupils
  • Teacher Education.

Our extensive and continually evolving postgraduate programmes include an innovative on-line doctorate in education as well as Masters degrees, including professionally focused qualifications in Educational Practice, and a number of named pathways in Adult Education; Support for Learning; Curriculum; English Language Teaching; Religion and Education.

A particular strength of the Faculty is educational leadership where we offer a number of programmes including our ground-breaking Masters in Educational and Public Service Leadership taught in collaboration with the University’s Business School.  Complementing this is a programme designed particularly for those who wish to become leaders in religiously denominated schools.  We also offer a Masters in Educational Research.

As a research-led Faculty of Education we are constantly re-shaping and developing our teacher education programmes which include a Bachelor of Education; Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary); Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary); MA in Philosophical and Religious Education; Bachelor of Technological Education and a Bachelor of Education (Music) taught in collaboration with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

The work of the Faculty is organised around four departments (Adult and Continuing Education; Curriculum Studies; Educational Studies; Religious Education) and a number of research and development centres (CRADALL; Centre for Science Education; Robert Clark Centre for Technological Education and SCRE).  Colleagues across the Faculty offer a wide range of research and professional consultancy as well as Continuing Professional Development.
