Information for prospective students

Students can choose to study or research within a single subject area or across subjects and disciplines in pursuit of the following degrees:

MLitt (taught)

Taught Masters programmes in the Arts and Humanities at Glasgow cover a very wide range of subjects and disciplines, from Classics and Archaeology to Popular Music and War Studies. For a full list of programmes, click here, or download a copy of our postgraduate taught course prospectus

MRes (taught and research)*

The MRes in Arts is a new (one year full time or two years part time) Masters research degree which you can complete in any subject within the Faculty of Arts. It allows you to acquire the research skills and specialisms necessary to complete a 20-25,000 word dissertation, preparing you for doctoral study, while standing as a qualification in its own right. Click here for more information.

MPhil, MLitt (Res), PhD

All subject areas offer supervision for the traditional research degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD - 3 years full-time; 5 years part-time) and Master of Letters (MLitt – 2 years full-time; 3 years part-time), and there is provision for co-supervision in topics which cross disciplines. Many Departments also offer the degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) by research (or MMus in the Department of Music and MTh in Theology and Religious Studies), normally 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time. The degrees of PhD by Published Work and DLitt are also offered by the Faculty. For further information and specifications, please contact the Graduate School Office.

While supervision and subject-specific training is the responsibility of individual Departments, research students who have not received postgraduate training elsewhere are required to participate in the Graduate School's Research Training programme.
